Sorry to do this again, but my bookmarks are piling up, as is my work work.
The Post ran an article on how, in nature, there are plenty of good dads. If I had time, I would post about how father's reproductive rights, lack thereof, and suits in pursuance of.
NYT ran a story about daycare not being so great for kids, as evidenced by Quebec. Since it'll go offline soon:
When they finished last year, the answer seemed clear. "Across almost everything we looked at," said Mr. Gruber, an M.I.T. professor, "the policy led to much worse outcomes for kids." Young children in Quebec are more anxious and aggressive than they were a decade ago, even though children elsewhere in Canada did not show big changes. Quebec children also learn to use a toilet, climb stairs and count to three at later ages, on average, than they once did. The effects weren't so great for parents, either. More of them reported being depressed, and they were less satisfied with their marriages — which also didn't happen in other provinces.
Sufficient Scruples had a good post about conscience clauses.
Metafilter had a discussion of embryonic gender selection, which is totally legal in the US, and, off the top of my head, illegal in the UK. At least that's what I remember from when I looked it up 3 years ago.
In case you didn't know, diabetes is dangerous during pregnancy.
The gypsies (Roma) are speaking out about their forced sterilization.
An article about the evolution of long sperm in a fruit fly.
Kaiser pointed me to an article about trigger laws. Shouldn't be a surprise, or news, but it's printed. So I'll direct you to it. Speaking of US laws, South Dakotans will vote on the abortion ban this fall. This is based on a referendum where people went door to door to get signatures that would allow the voters of the state to determine whether the law should stay on the books.
Hello? Have we talked about domestic violence? One survey in Scotland found an alarming number of women thought it was okay to hit their male partners. In the meantime, Indian women are being rented out by their husbands. Due to infanticide and sex-selective abortions (now illegal) many area of India are short on women. Market economy solves all, no?
Did you know that humans are genetically programmed to have sex, and children, when they are young and healthy and have energy? If this strikes you as odd, you'll hate this guy. (edited for snarkiness). Speaking of teens, a school in the UK has banned the wearing of purity rings. The rings are jewelry, and jewelry is not allowed.
Stress is bad for pregnancy. Wait, didn't we just see that it made healthier babies? Aargh. Anyway, counseling, if you're infertile, can help you reduce the stress, which helps you get pregnant. With dumb babies, apparently.
Lastly for the night, the decline in fertility in developed countries can be solved. By IVF. Brilliant. I'm sure it has nothing to do with working mothers, poor access to child care (although from that Canadian study, maybe we don't want child care) poor schooling, a lessened need for children, the cost of raising children, and a concern that, well, we're sending to planet to hell in a handbasket? Nope, the problem, apparently, is the lack of stranger's sperm.
For real, I should not post when I'm in this kind of a mood.
